After a long wait of more than two decades, Kolkata finally got its metro train operating as a public rapid transit system. Initially, metro was only limited to commercial purposes, but in 2010, KMRC introduced metro for daily passengers running on one operational line of 27.22 km between Noapara and Kavi Subhash. The other five lines are still under constructions which will be operational soon.

Along with CTC trams and buses, the KMRC has contributed to cope up with the increasing problem of traffic congestion to a great extent, carrying over 650,000 passengers daily with 300 running metros.
