Indian Railways in association with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is all set to deploy technologies like GPS (global positioning systems), GIS (geographical information systems) & RS (remote sensing) to make our journey much safer and convenient. It plans to procure satellite images for tracking rail routes to ease out our navigation blues.
ISRO’s GAGAN for Indian Railways:
ISRO’s GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system will be used to source satellite images. GAGAN, an indigenous navigation system jointly developed by ISRO and Airports Authority of India (AAI) that facilitates aircrafts in accurate landing. This service will now be utilized by Indian Railways in mapping train routes to avoid delays and congestion.
A senior Railway Ministry official quoted, “We will sign an MoU with ISRO shortly to avail the online satellite images to create a GIS platform.” He continued, “We will undertake a massive exercise of GIS mapping of the entire rail route and assets including buildings, land, workshops and other facilities in the network using geospatial technology.”
